Let’s talk dirt! More specifically, compost.
Compost is a mixture of ingredients used to fertilize and improve the soil. It is commonly prepared by decomposing plant and food waste and recycling organic materials. The resulting mixture is rich in plant nutrients and beneficial organisms, such as worms and fungal mycelium. If you are thinking of starting your own compost pile or already have one going Skipper’s Bay would love to help take it to the next level!
You can start a compost pile anytime of year, but Fall is when both nitrogen and carbon materials are readily available. There is also a little something that’s full of these materials naturally that we happen to have on hand all year round – LOBSTER! Lobster shells provide a great source of chiton, calcium, magnesium and nitrogen. Their slow breakdown also promotes good drainage for the compost pile overall, but their chiton content helps retain the proper amount of moisture needed, making lobster shells an excellent addition to compost piles in both dry and humid areas!
As a lobster meat company picking hundreds of pounds of lobster meat a day you can imagine how many lobster shells and bodies we need to get rid of. Instead of throwing all the shells in the landfill we wanted to be more environmental friendly while also helping our neighbors and local businesses out. We’d love to give away our shells to any local home gardener, cannabis farmer, home grower, farmer or anyone looking to take their compost to the next level.
