When we think of summer, we think of lobster. Yes, maybe it’s because we are in the lobster business, but it’s most likely because we’re from New England. One of our favorite summer activities is throwing a backyard lobster party with all our family and friends. One that starts in the early afternoon and goes all night. Here’s how we do it.
Where to get started? First things first, pick a date, make that guest list and send out the invite. Once your crew is established it’s time to finalize the menu. We like to keep it classic with New England clam chowder, steamed lobsters, TONS of drawn butter and lemons, corn on the cob (which is BEST in August), potato salad, coleslaw, pasta salad, kettle chips and loads of rosé and craft beer.
This is a super messy menu which is why we love to host in our yard instead of our dining room. Pull out that old picnic table that you don’t mind getting covered in lobster drippings and butter or make sure you put down a tablecloth over that nice patio furniture. That being said, in addition to a tablecloth be sure to set your table with loads of napkins, paper towels and wet wipes. Having these readily available will make for a seamless event. We love to set our tables up before the guests arrive with plates, silverware, lobster crackers and picks, everything they’ll need to enjoy our fresh Maine lobsters and meat. All they need to do is grab a drink and a seat.
You’ll be manning the lobster pot, it’ll need to be a very large pot, one big enough for cooking many lobsters at once. Also, be sure and turn that lobster pot on before your guests arrive as it can take over an hour to get to a boil!
Our Skipper, Nate Stone says that you’ve got to add aromatics to the water as well. “Make sure you add garlic, lemon, lime and fresh herbs,” says Nate. “If you can get sea water, then use that. If not, make sure to add about 1/4 cup of salt to your pot. Bring that to a boil and continue the boil for about 30 minutes before adding the lobster and I promise it will be the most spectacular lobster you’ve ever had!”
Once everyone has had a lobster – or two, sit back and enjoy a lobster of your own. Enjoy your party, friends and family. The flavor of a fresh steamed Skipper’s Bay Lobster is like no other and we think it tastes even better in the summer!
